03.09.202507:15:00UTC+00South Africa's Manufacturing Growth Slows in August as PMI Reaches 50.1

South Africa has observed a deceleration in its manufacturing growth as the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI slipped slightly in August. The Purchasing Managers' Index, which serves as a critical barometer of the country's manufacturing health, fell to 50.1 from the previous 50.3 recorded in July, according to data updated on 03 September 2025.

The marginal drop in the PMI suggests a slowdown in growth momentum but remains above the crucial 50-mark that separates expansion from contraction within the manufacturing sector. Despite the easing, the PMI figures indicate that the sector is still managing to sustain growth, albeit at a slower pace.

These data insights reflect persistent challenges within the sector, including potential supply chain bottlenecks and inflationary pressures. As South African manufacturers navigate through these issues, the gradual decline in the PMI may warrant close attention from policymakers and industry leaders to ensure sustained growth and resilience in the coming months.
